Single Scanner BLS System for Forest Plot Mapping

چکیده
The 3-D information collected from sample plots is significant for forest inventories. Terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) has been demonstrated to be an effective device in data acquisition of plots. Although TLS able achieve precise measurements, multiple scans are usually necessary collect more detailed data, which generally requires time scan preparation and field acquisition. In contrast, mobile (MLS) being increasingly utilized mapping due its mobility. However, the geometrical peculiarity forests introduces challenges. this article, a test backpack-based MLS system, i.e., backpack (BLS), designed plot without global navigation satellite system/inertial measurement unit (GNSS-IMU) system. To accurate matching, article proposes combine line point features calculating transformation, feature derived trunk skeletons. Then, scan-to-map matching strategy proposed correcting positional drift. Finally, evaluates effectiveness accuracy method experimental results indicate that achieves using BLS; meanwhile, compared existing methods, utilizes geometric attributes trees reaches lower error, mean errors root square horizontal/vertical direction less than 3 cm.

Optimising Mobile Mapping System Laser Scanner Orientation
Multiple laser scanner hardware configurations can be applied to Mobile Mapping Systems. As best practice, laser scanners are rotated horizontally or inclined vertically to increase the probability of contact between the laser scan plane and any surfaces that are perpendicular to the direction of travel. Vertical inclinations also maximise the number of scan profiles striking narrow vertical fe...
متن کاملTerrestrial Laser Scanning for Plot-Scale Forest Measurement
Plot-scale measurements have been the foundation for forest surveys and reporting for over 200 years. Through recent integration with airborne and satellite remote sensing, manual measurements of vegetation structure at the plot scale are now the basis for landscape, continental and international mapping of our forest resources. The use of terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) for plot-scale measure...
متن کاملEvaluation of a Smartphone App for Forest Sample Plot Measurements
We evaluated a smartphone app (TRESTIMATM) for forest sample plot measurements. The app interprets imagery collected from the sample plots using the camera in the smartphone and then estimates forest inventory attributes, including species-specific basal areas (G) as well as the diameter (DgM) and height (HgM) of basal area median trees. The estimates from the smartphone app were compared to fo...
متن کاملObject-based Semi-automatic Mapping of Forest Stands with Laser Scanner and Multi-spectral Data
This paper details the development and testing of an object-based mapping of forest stands using an object-oriented image analysis methodology. The object-based mapping of forest structures using high-resolution airborne data is demonstrated for the Bavarian Forest National Park, which is located in south-eastern Germany along the border with the Czech Republic. Within the project “Evaluation o...
متن کاملLaser Scanner Simulator for System Analysis and Algorithm Development: a Case with Forest Measurements
LIDAR systems have come to be extensively used in photogrammetry and mapping sciences. The accuracy of 3D information is mainly affected by navigational and system-dependent uncertainties, but also by the laser beam properties and the nature of the light interaction on the object surface. At the moment, the system-dependent sources of error are much better known than those arising from laser li...
